PLM Glossary

  • ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning, ERP systems are software tools used for the planning and control of the product from order entry through shipment. The typical ERP suites integrate the manufacturing, distribution and financial functions. Thus, ERP systems are business strategies to enable manufacturing companies to optimize their operations. (see Bourke Consulting Associates)
  • FSE – Field Service Engineer 
  • MRP – Manufacturing Resource Planning, an earlier generation or lower tier system of ERP.
  • PDM - Product Data Management, an earlier generation reference to PLM, PDM typically encompasses simple document vaulting and change management.
  • PLM – Product Lifecycle Management, the set of processes that manages product related information from concept to production to obsolescence – at a systems level, an set of enterprise applications or point solutions that enable those processes.
  • RoHS - European regulations for the Reduction of Hazardous Substances – good information site can be found at http://www.rohs-news.com/
  • SMB – Small to Midsized Business (typically refers to businesses that are between $50M – $500M annual revenue
  • SME – Subject Matter Expert 
  • WEEE – tightly connect to RoHS, regulations regarding Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, see http://www.rohs-news.com/

  2. Laila, could you please add SMB to your glossary? Your Nov 08 blog referred to SMBs, but I don’t have a clue. Interesting read, anyway.
    Any more stories from the front lines of PLM implementation that you could share with us? Any thoughts on I-DEAS/NX to TeamCenter?

    • Thanks for the suggestions. I made the addition you requested for the glossary and already have ideas formulating on what to share regarding implementations. I-deas/NX migrations are vendor specific which I prefer to avoid on this blog however would be happy to discuss it with you directly. I’ll send you a note with my contact information.
